Woman and Her Maid c. 1657 Oil on canvas, 53 x 42 cm The Hermitage, St. Petersburg 피터 데 호흐 / Pieter de Hooch (1629 - 1684) 17세기 네델란드 로테르담 출생의 풍속화가로 하를렘에서 N.베르헴에게 그림을 배우고 그 뒤 델프트로 가서 그곳의 화 가모임에도 참여했다. 얀 페르메이르와 함께 델프트 화파 (Delft School)를 대표 하며, 중산층 가정의 고요한 실내와 정원 풍경을 평온하고 정갈 하게 그렸다. 처음에는 선술집 등 정경을 그리다가 뒤에 친구 얀 페르메 이르와 함께 중류가정의 아담한 분위기, 정원의 풍경 등을 주제 로 한 새로운 경향의 우아한 풍속화를 발표하기 시작했다. 소박한 그의 그림 속에는 일상이 가진 꾸밈없는 진정성을 느 끼게 해준다. 그의 그림은 교묘한 원근법과 환상적인 색채의 구사로 그때 까지의 풍속화에서는 찾아볼 수 없는 새로운 공간감을 느끼게 한다. 그러나 1660년대 암스테르담으로 자리를 옮긴 뒤부터 의 작품은 점차 소박한 친밀감을 잃고 유행에 따른 화려하고 환상적인 풍속화 쪽으로 기울었다. 대표작으로 중간 뜰, 시골집 앞에서의 작별, 선술집 등이있다.
